What is Tricking?

Tricking is a sport that pulls from MANY disciplines; karate, taekwondo, dance and breakdance, tumbling, capoeira, and many more movement sports. Tricking is a free sport with no equipment necessary. As long as YOU are doing the skill, you’re tricking.

Tricking, “martial arts tricking”, was coined in the early 1990’s through American sport karate competitions. Competitors would train to perform bigger and harder kicks and flips, better “tricks’’, to compete against others, linking moves together to create combos and adding elements from breakdancing. Eventually, videos of these competitions and flips overall started emerging on the internet through forum sites and grew even more when YouTube launched (2005). Anyone could look up “ninja flips” or “how to do a backflip” and since there was a limited amount of resources available, the tight knit community was formed. People looking to learn this new sport of freestyle flips that would stray from the formal training that gymnastics, martial arts, and cheerleading offered. Tricking was born out of curiosity and passion with a strong sense of community through the niche interest that we all shared.

Tricking is kicks

Tricking is non-combative, kicks from karate, tae kwon do, and capoeira are used alongside flips and tumbling.

Tricking STARTED in martial arts competitions in the early 90’s. Martial artists would compete to have the bigger and more creative kicks to beat their competition. This lead to higher level kicks and combinations to be created and eventually people who weren’t in martial arts wanted to learn the freestyle/dynamic side of kicking.

Tricking is flips

Flips off of two feet, one foot, completely inverted or flipped over the side, flipping is a HUGE part of Tricking.

From handstands to double backflips, flips of all levels are used in Tricking combos.

Tricking is dance

Tricking is freestyle movement. As well as pulling different skills from dance, Tricking takes the battle structure from breakdance battles, 1v1, 2v2, in some
of our competitions.

Dancers love to learn Tricking for the dynamic and inverted skills to add to their routines.

Tricking is community

We say that Tricking as a sport is 40% community, you’re not getting the full experience if you’re not training with your friends, learning from each other, and teaching other beginners.

Beginners share the floor with the advanced/elite trickers. Inspiration and guidance from others is essential to learning the many skills and aspects to this sport.

“The best way to get good at Tricking is tricking with your friends.”

Tricking is fun!

While being difficult.. we’re doing flips and creating combos that are exciting and fun to learn. Especially when you’re with a community, learning skills and training together is like going to the skate park with your friends, you’re having fun through movement. The feeling of accomplishment when you land a new trick is like
nothing else!

Tricking is haarrddd

Tricking is one of the hardest sports in the world. There’s no equipment to help and you have to produce all the shapes and power on your own. The great part is, you can learn any and all of the skills that you want to learn. Tricking has so many options. If you know how to flip, kicks can be hard.. Even if you know how to kick, flips can be hard. Tricking includes skills that rotate, flip, and twist at
every axis of motion.
